You do not need exotic math to see the ladder. Two clear takeaways:

  1. Even 10c is transformative on interstellar scales. Alpha Centauri in about half a year. Sirius in under a year. The nearby neighborhood becomes reachable on human timescales.
  2. The galaxy is still huge at 10c and 100c. You need 1000c to make the galactic center a decades scale trip. You need something like a million c to make Andromeda plausible within a few years.
